1. Castle of Cervera

The castle (1026) and its precinct were intended to consolidate and defend the county of Osona’a furthermost frontier in response to the dangers posed by the Muslims. The intention was to settle the population in the area with the assistance of the military orders (the Knights Templar and the Knights Hospitaller) and the Benedictines (church of Sant Pere el Gros). In the 12th century this small centre was linked to the Cervera family and became a royal domain.

With the building of the first houses, and surrounded by the first walls, the castle formed the original centre of what would become the town. It maintained its importance until falling into complete decadence in the 16th century.
