10. Castelltort's Hospital

The new Castelltort hospital replaced the one that was demolished to make way for the university. It was designed by Francesc Soriano and incorporated some of the most modern ideas concerning hospital architecture. It is arranged around an interior courtyard with semi-circular arches supported by pillars.

The contribution made by Simó Grau d’Alinyar, a captain in the infantry, was important in enabling the construction of the hospital church, dedicated to Our Lady Carme. A stone engraved with the benefactor’s coat of arms stands in the church doorway, and the hospital administrators commissioned a portrait of him in which he appears with a model of the planned church.
