4. The Town Hall and Plaça del Blat, or Plaça Mercadal.

The constant growth of the town led to another displacement of the centre of activities. In 1338, the Town Hall, which at the time had porches that provided shelter from the rain for cereals and other produce, consolidated its position as the political and economic centre governing merchants and artisans. Throughout the 14th century the square became firmly established as the place for unloading and selling wheat and the Plaça Nova (New Square) also became known as Plaça del Blat (Wheat Square) and Plaça del Mercat (Market Square). The modern-day Town Hall and square no longer reflect the medieval appearance or layout they possessed in the 17th and 18th centuries.
