The former residence of the Jesuits and church of Saint Bernat was built as a result of a legacy received from Francesc de Santmartí and Ausiàs Marc. Noteworthy amongst this group of buildings is the large chapel of the Immaculada, with elegant Rococo-inspired decoration.
The chapel was dedicated to the Mare de Déu de l’Incendi (Virgin Mary of the Fire) and contains a small statue, representing the Virgin Mary, which had been sent from Salta in Argentina to the Jesuit Pere Ferrussola, who was the driving force behind the building works.
With the expulsion of the Jesuits from Spanish territories the residence became a residential college, dedicated to Sant Carles, in honour of the king, for the housing of university students. The colleges of Assumpció, Concepció and Santa Creu were for the poorer students.
