At the end of the 13th century there was a large Jewish community, or aljama, which would remain until 1492, when Jews were expelled. At first they settled in Carrer de n’Agramuntell (now the Carreró del Teco), next to the north gate of the first walled town, which would later to be known as Portal Mitjà, or 'middle gate'.
This first Jewish quarter had a synagogue at the lower end of the street, a butcher’s shop and its own drainage system. It was soon outgrown and between 1327 and 1336 the Jewish community was assigned a new quarter, outside the city walls, called Sobirà. In 1384 a second synagogue or school was authorised on Carrer del Vent (now named Carrer del Call).
At its peak the Jewish community consisted of some 250 to 350 people.
