The architectural plans for the building were drawn up by four people. The first two of whom were military engineers of Franco-Belgian origin, François de Montaigu and Alexandre de Retz, who designed a building structured around three porticoed quadrangles. The third was Francesc Soriano and the fourth, the engineer Miguel Marín, who gave the building its final form. Jaume Padró was responsible for the sculptural decoration.
The finest part of the building is the central section which contains the library and the chapel, the latter being used not only for religious purposes, but also as an auditorium or theatre, as well as for solemn occasions such as degree-giving ceremonies.
